Beachfront: 6.5 miles on ocean (8 beaches), part of a 2,413-acre park. Lifeguards: May 29-Sept. 12; hours vary weekends/holidays. West Bath House open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. weekends/holidays June 26-Sept. 6, to 7 p.m. weekends/holidays Aug. 16-Sept. 6. East Bath House open weekends/holidays 10 a.m.-8 p.m. June 26-Aug. 15. Parking lots West End 2, 4, 6 and 10 open year-round.

Facilities: Zachs Bay beach, 2 pools, 2 bathhouses, band shell, 2-mile boardwalk, 2-mile health walk, 4-mile bike path, boat basin, 4 finger piers, bait station, surf casting, picnic areas, amphitheater, 4 basketball courts, 22 shuffleboard courts, paddle tennis, equipment rentals, pitch-putt golf (to Nov. 28), 2 softball fields (permit), food stands, Boardwalk Restaurant, ice cream parlor, sand chairs for disabled at Fields 2, 6, Central Mall and Field 6 beach ramp, specially equipped playground at Central Mall.

Port Washington. Northern State Pkwy. to exit 29, north on Roslyn Rd.   Beachfront: Half-mile on Hempstead Harbor, off the Sound. Lifeguards: May 22-Sept. 6 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Facilities: 2 basketball courts, 3 handball/paddleball courts, 5 shuffleboard courts, open-air shelter with picnic tables for seniors (weekdays only), fishing pier for drop-line fishing, playground, aerodrome for radio-controlled model planes (permit), picnic area with grills, volleyball area on beach.

Lido Beach. Mea dowbrook Pkwy. to south end, then Loop Pkwy. to Lido Blvd. Beachfront: Half-mile on ocean. Lifeguards: May 22-Sept. 6, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends/holidays. Facilities: 2 pools (fee), 2 tennis courts (fee), basketball court, play grounds, handball/paddleball, snack bars, 74 camp sites (fee), picnic area (reservation), surf casting (permit required). Programs include senior citizen activities and special events.

                               Fire Island
New York island (32 miles long, 1/4 mile wide). It supports a state park, a county park, the national seashore, many communities, and a 7 mile stretch from Smith Point to Watch Hill that is the only federally designated wilderness area in New York state.
